Baby Has Loose Motions

Foods to Avoid When Loose Motions in Babies (Diarrhea)

diarrhea in babies

Diarrhea or loose motions are very common in infants and babies due to their immune system still being in its development stages. Foods, even their usual baby formula and feed can cause an upset stomach. Sometimes, drinking water for the first few times can cause diarrhea as well.

What to do When Loose Motion in Kids

While loose motions in kids are common, they can be a cause of concern due to possible dehydration and potential diaper rashes they bring with them.

One of the first things to do when you notice that your baby has loose motions is to not panic and give them too many liquids. Trying to compensate for the dehydration and lost fluid too fast can make loose motions worse in babies.

Secondly, the right kind of food and care needs to be given to a baby suffering from loose motions as infants can dehydrate quickly. Look for symptoms of dehydration such as dry mouth and eyes and an unusual lethargy in the baby. If these symptoms exist, call a medical professional immediately.

While bowel movements in babies fluctuate and only a parent knows their baby’s poo patterns, a watery stool more frequently than usual is one of the symptoms of diarrhea in babies.

Home Remedies for Loose Motions in Babies

A few foods to avoid in loose motions in kids include leafy vegetables and citrus foods. Ideally, a child should be given food that is gentle on their digestive system and does not require a lot of energy for digestion.

For example, a child should not be given grapes in loose motions. There are many home remedies for diarrhea for newborn babies. These include giving them warm and light fluids such as plain broth and heavily diluted milk or baby formula.

While many infants seem to enjoy mango because of its taste and soft texture, a mango for baby during loose motions is not the best idea. Its high sugar content makes it a food that requires energy for digestion and can worsen the loose motion in kids.

Many people ask if a pineapple is good for loose motions. While pineapples aid in digestion and are good for your gut, babies and infants should not be given pineapples. Pineapple is a fruit that requires proper chewing and often carries an after-sensation due to its pricks and pines. It could also scratch the baby’s throat if not mashed properly.

Avoid giving your baby concentrated fruit juices and liquids that are processed and contain high sugar. Bananas are an excellent food for babies with loose motion because they help with the hardening of stool. If your baby is above 6-8 months, mashed soft bread would also be a good choice.

Loose motion in newborn needs extra care. Do not try to give any foods or medicine without consulting a doctor. Keep feed to its normal routine and do not try to give water to your baby unless recommended by your doctor.

Finally, another food to help with loose motion in babies is plain Yogurt. Giving a child a few spoons of yogurt can help soothe their system and its probiotic properties can help reset their digestion and provide relief.

While these tips are helpful, it is always a good idea to reach out to a medical professional in times where you are unsure of what to feed your baby in loose motions.
